INST 100 Direct Current 1 4 CR A thorough introduction for the new student to the fundamental properties and applications of electricity. This course opens the doors to a wide array of career opportunities in computer servicing, biomedical equipment servicing, manufacturing technology, telecommunications, and home entertainment equipment servicing. In addition, safety procedures are emphasized. Students learn how to make good solder connections and recognize and repair bad solder connections. Students learn how to select and clean soldering tools. This course continues with the basics of current, voltage and resistance. The application of Ohm’s Law and the construction of circuits to verify electronic theory provide the knowledge necessary to build the foundation for a thorough understanding of electronics. This course teaches the student to use a logical course of correction to an electronic problem in a minimum amount of time. Student will learn generic troubleshooting technique procedures and tricks of the trade from analog to digital circuits. Prerequisite(s): BTC College Level Math score of 75 or MATH 090 with a C or higher; ACCUPLACER Reading Comprehension score of 71 or RDG 085 with a C or higher; and ACCUPLACER Sentence Skills score of 71 or ENGL 092 with a C or higher; completion of Intermediate Algebra (MATH 099 ) or placement into Pre-Calculus ( MATH & 141 ).
