ELA 001 English Language Acquisition: Beginning 1 18 CR This course is designed to improve the communication skills for the Limited English Proficient adult who functions with difficulty in situations related to immediate needs such as providing personal information on simple forms. Emphasis is on reading simple material on familiar subjects; interpreting simple directions, schedules, signs, and maps; and conveying ideas in simple notes and messages using present tense “be” verb tenses and present continuous verb tenses. In oral communication, students learn to convey immediate needs in limited social situations using simple learned and often repeated phrases. Emphasis is on listening actively to understand and respond to verbal and non-verbal communication, expressing basic survival needs, and participating in some routine social conversations.
